Moving to the cloud: what it really means, and why it's worth doing properly

Cloud migration is straightforward to describe and easy to get wrong. Here is what it actually involves and what it changes.

In plain terms, cloud migration is moving your data, applications and IT systems from on-site servers to a cloud-based environment. That can happen all at once, or system by system over months, depending on what the business can absorb.

Traditionally companies ran physical servers on site. It worked, but it carried high capital costs, ongoing maintenance and very little flexibility. You bought for the peak and paid for it all year.

What changes

Flexibility

Resources scale to what you need, and you pay for what you use. Taking on twenty seasonal staff stops being an infrastructure project.

Cost

Less hardware to buy, less to maintain, and no data centre to power and cool. Over a few years that is usually a material reduction in total IT spend — though be wary of anyone promising it in month one.

Performance and access

Cloud platforms run on infrastructure most SMEs could never justify buying, which generally means better speed, reliability and uptime. Teams reach systems remotely, which makes flexible working an administrative decision rather than a technical one.

Security

Security is the objection we hear most, and it is usually backwards. Major cloud providers offer protection, backup and disaster recovery that an on-premises server in a cupboard cannot realistically match. The risk in cloud is almost always configuration, not the platform.

Doing it without breaking anything

Every stage — planning, sequencing, migration, optimisation — needs care. Migrations go wrong when someone moves the mail system on a Friday and discovers on Monday which twelve things depended on it.

What good looks like:

  • A documented plan with an order and a rollback point at each stage
  • Secure data migration with integration tested before cutover, not after
  • Monitoring and support in place from day one
  • A design sized to the business you'll be in three years, not the one you are today
