The challenge
Pipers Corner is an independent girls' day school in Great Kingshill, Buckinghamshire, with 605 pupils aged 4 to 18 on a 96-acre campus. Its pastoral team had seen vaping grow among older pupils, but in a day school it looked different from a boarding school: a few places, at predictable times — break, and the start and end of the day. With much younger children on the same site, any response had to be proportionate.
What we did
We started from where incidents had actually been reported, then recommended sensors only in those parts of the senior school: toilets, changing rooms and sheltered outdoor spots. Verkada SV11 sensors alert staff in real time and link to nearby cameras so footage can be checked straight away. We trained the designated safeguarding lead and the pastoral staff to run the platform themselves.
The outcome
Staff now know quickly when and where vaping happens and can respond consistently, with timestamped sensor and camera data behind each case. The school reports a clear deterrent effect and much greater staff confidence in handling safeguarding cases.
